The official title for Final Fantasy VII Remake 2 is Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Square Enix has confirmed. Indeed, this isn't a remake anymore β it's almost certainly spiralling off into its own thing, as demonstrated in the trailer above. We imagine that this will be a move that won't go down well with everyone, but we're still interested in seeing how it all unfolds.
We're not sure it's a huge surprise, but Rebirth is going to be a PS5 exclusive. It's targeting a Winter 2023 launch, which means that we're supposed to be getting two blockbuster Final Fantasy titles next year, with Final Fantasy XVI also scheduled.
What do you make of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth? Watch out for plot ghosts in the comments section below.

Someone cage Nomura quick! π
Edit: My original post poked fun at console wars and inadvertently created one, so my bad, there is literally no point in me starting one as I should have predicted this outcome, although not to this degree... I'm sorry and should have realised how narrow minded people can be, myself included so I will leave this with my actual on topic reaction to the announcement.
I'm insanely hyped for this game and can't believe the output of these magicians at Square Enix, FF 7 Remake, Intergrade, Crisis Core Remaster, Forspoken, FF 7 Rebirth and FF 16 in the span of 4 years holy cowww! Nomura must be a god or something because the golden era of Square Enix and JRPG's is coming back, between Square, Atlus and Capcom Japanese games are back on top and I'm all for it. Can't wait to play through the entire series, many for the first time in order and maybe by the time this comes out I will be all caught up. Happy gaming and all I can say it's just good to see so much gaming news again after such a long drought.πππ
Super hyped! Especially news it's it's trilogy. Technically they said next winter. So end of Dec 2023 to March 2024. Problem with using seasons as release dates. Wish they just said Q1 2024
Incredible! The best gaming announcement weβve had all year!
So we should expect the game mid 2024 at the earliest. Pretty disappointing, but releasing it any sooner will just cause too many issues.
No words for how excited I am, and it's nice to see a PS5 only game again, a good reminder even with this gen transition starting to get incredibly annoying, the true PS5 only games that we were promised are coming.
@GorosBat About time, I say. If people are still struggling to get a PS5 by next winter, something is terribly wrong. At some point the industry has to move on and even if you can't get it day one, it will be waiting right there when you can.
Of course it isn't a straight remake. That was obvious in the first one, it's a remake/sequel. It's bringing new people in while giving veteran players a fresher story.
We're people complaining in 2017 that games weren't coming to ps3 as well?
@GorosBat No, this is great news! Itβs not limited by PS4βs hardware capability. I canβt wait for a truly βcurrent genβ only game.
In the immortal words of Neil Gaiman, βBatman if he's now a news reporter in a yellow trenchcoat with a pet batβ.
I am way beyond hyped. I love the original storyline, but I am open to what they do now.
Hopefully, we can simply go in a store and buy a PS5 by the time this game is released...
@tselliot I just want to see all the Persona 3/4 hypocrites outraging over the fact that this game is launching exclusively on Playstation and aren't allowing people to play on the platform they choose.
We getting two ps5 exclusive final fantasy games in the same year is crazy.
Ah it's going to be amazing - I'm excited to see where they take the story and how the characters change. This was the right decision. Take your time! So many games!
@tselliot I think Goro was complaining not because it isn't coming to PS4 but because it will only be on PS5 on release and not any other systems like PC. But it'll be nice to see PS5 only games soon what's holding me back from enjoying PS5 right now is it feels like a PS4 Pro most the time with barely anything that is actual next gen
@get2sammyb He's already working in pre-production for part 3.
Also, what a pleasant surprise, didn't think they would show this.
@BlackMayge Yes, but there's no reason it can't launch on Xbox series and PC, little ironic that there isn't any outcry over this being exclusive when we know it will come to every system.
With pre-production already well underway for the third and final part, this may just release on time!
I am extremely happy about this!
I know people will complain about the direction a lot but personally I don't need it to be the same game it was 25 years ago. I already played that one!
Looks like we're not going to the Gold Saucer with Barret.
As someone who never played the original....I can't wait, Day One purchase for me and THE game of 2023.
Forget Starfield, BotW or anything else. This is pure gaming joy.
Sony got two final fantasy games and spider man 2 next year I know Sony really trying to kill Xbox but this is overkill.
@ApostateMage i guess you'll have to wait and see if it is or not
Removed - trolling/baiting; user is banned
@ApostateMage The Gold Saucer is now actually the power of friendship that time traveled from the distant past. Cait Sith was in our hearts all along.
i wasn't expecting this for the winter , that's crazy , i can't wait to play. at least we get a sense of direction they are going in and that it will have one more game.
Removed - flaming/arguing
I called that itβd be called Rebirth to my friends a couple years back. It just made perfect sense if theyβre going to switch the story up. Iβm so amped up for this. Iβve never played the original so Iβm glad to know we are getting more of the story soon.
FF16, FF7R2, Granblue Fantasy: Relink, and Spider-Man 2! 2023 was personally built for me. It was meant to make me happy. Quiet Sony has really been sitting on a goldmine. Let's Go!
At this point Iβm expecting Ultimecia to show up.
Don't care about final fantasy but get ready for the salt from Xbox only gamers whilst ignoring that their next big game was originally supposed to be multi platform lol
Wow, that's a quick turnaround from Part I in 2020.
2023 is starting to look pretty damn stacked for PS5.
Removed - flaming/arguing; user is banned
Well, time to really get a PS5 now. FFXVI and FF7R part 2 is all you need to convince me to get a PS5, Sony. Also didn't expect a next year release, it's on Winter but still, didn't expect that early
Come on!
If you're into JRPGs you don't buy an Xbox.
They've cornered the market in Western RPGs, let PlayStation have something nice!
100% 3rd part will be:
Final Fantasy VII:REunion
Removed - flaming/arguing
Honestly I'm shocked. KH4, FF7R2, FFXVI, DQ12, RE4R, DD2, SF6. So many games already announced and it feels like the gen barely started. And that's not even counting Persona 6 which will likely be the last anniversary announcement, and the new monster hunter which is no doubt coming
How is it not a remake? It's part of the whole remake of FF7, there just calling it Rebirth instead.
Probably best gaming event/announcement of the year so far .
@Snake_V5 I'm guessing because the story is going to go very differently from the original.
There's no clear cut definition of 'remake' though I think.
Going to wait until all games have come out to play them back to back... JK, I'll be long dead by then so can't wait for this!!
@SplooshDmg I don't know, the characters in the trailer seemed to acknowledge that the original events exist(Ed?) , so rebirth def seems quite fitting.
@GorosBat By now you should've understand that Sony is the one funding Square Enix to make the FF 7 Remake series.
@GorosBat
So what about Goldeneye and Indiana Jones? Two third party IP's that Xbox doesn't own yet exclusive to Xbox? Let's not pretend Sony are the only ones who do this.
Also, did you know that Epic was going to port the Gears of War trilogy to PlayStation so Microsoft bought it to prevent that? They're not so innocent.
@GADG3Tx87 You're completely missing the point, I'm complaining about the lack of complaint when sony do it but when microsoft do it, they get massive backlash. I'm not disregarding the fact that microsoft do it as well and I agree with you on that fact, but IMO I don't think ANY company should do this EVER.
Excellent news! The PS5 is the best place for the game since FF7 is a PS1 exclusive and helped to establish the playstation brand. In addition, the game will have not the limitation of the PS4 hardware. I have no problems with changing the story adding new content, in addition, it was already done in the FF remake part I.
@GorosBat I mean Microsoft slammed a bunch of money down to buy out a majority of WRPG devs if they hadn't ehh It would be different
@GorosBat
There are plenty of people who are against it even from PlayStation fans, myself included. There are games I want to play that are exclusive to one or another, just don't expect to see such complaints here on a primarily PlayStation website, but I assure you it happens elsewhere.
Just like you don't see people complain about third party exclusives on PureXbox. In fact I've seen them cheer and gloat for such announcements before.
I wish they would remake FFVII.
This game looks cool though
Can't say I expected FF16 and this in the same year, less than 6 months apart. As for its PS5 exclusivity, that was obviously going to be the case but the fact FFVII Remake is only coming to Steam tomorrow rather than Steam and Xbox suggests the rumours about Sony acquiring Square Enix are true.
@GADG3Tx87 I was just trying to call out the people for this exact point, nothing more, I want as many people to experience games as possible. I love playing games on whatever I choose because options should always be a thing.
As a person who has completed ff7 too many times to count I'm ok with them going in a different direction this time. It's really cool how sephiroth knows he loses in the original game and wants to change his fate
This is incredible news. Crisis core this year and two mainline Final Fantasy titles to enjoy next. Cannot wait!
@GorosBat Not a gripe, but an observation: I'm not crazy about console exclusives either because I want to readily own any game that I fancy, but the reality is they keep the competition between companies and systems alive which prevents monopolistic practices from taking over gaming. Frustrating for sure if you're an Xbox owner though.
@GorosBat
I'm not disagreeing with you there, you're right and I want that too but people here will not say that however plenty of PlayStation gamers say it elsewhere on more 'neutral' websites.
I for one would like to play Octopath Traveller on PlayStation, but I can't because it's curiously only on Switch and Xbox yet Sony are seemingly quite close to Square Enix.
Where are those people saying E3 should come back?
This month long of announcements is much better!
These straight to the consumer presentations are the future. Not E3 presentations for investors.
It's taken longer than it should have really, but I'm really happy it's finally announced. If this makes it out in 2023, like others have said, I already know what my Game of the Year will be. Absolutely loved the first part.
It was expected to be a departure from the original, but with the name change, obviously this confirms that it's going off in a completely new direction and I'm fine with that. I'm one of the only souls to have never actually finished the original, so this being totally different gives me more of an incentive to go back to the original and play it someday.
@munstre Sony could afford Square if they really wanted to, they wouldn't cost anywhere near the price of Activision/blizzard, helps that several of the Western developers just got bought from Embracer Group, which would lower that cost further. If buying every major publisher is the way the industry is going, I'd want Sony to buy Square Enix, I'd also imagine that they'd make the money back on their investment pretty quick.
Sony clearly recognizes Final Fantasy is a big deal for them. How long until they put a ring on Square-Enix's finger to avoid Phil Spencer backing up a truck load of cash to take it away?
Ahh, so to play it I have to sacrifice my first born on a full moon night, at midnight while standing on one foot, just to get a SHOT to buy a PS5 for 3 times it's actual price.
It would be nice if these other two FFVII games are not crowded with Re-Filler like the first one. Also, no complains to taking the story elsewhere, since I have never played the original FFVII.
@ChesterAdams125
If you're in the U.S., Walmart is the way to go. They announce when they will release more stock, often require store pickup, and have a limit of one per address or account per 30 days. It really reduces the scalpers. Plus, they have a nice queuing system. I was able to get two PS5s the month after launch (one for me and one for my brother) and two more this year (both for friends). All this from Walmart. Everywhere else I've tried, and I've tried plenty of stores, I got nothing but frustration.
@GorosBat This isn't great, but at least the Final Fantasy audience is mostly on PlayStation so it makes a bit more sense. Persona 3 and 4 being Xbox exclusive would've been pretty stupid bc the audience for that series is all on PS.
@TheCollector316 I have one, I'm just joking around lol.
N.i.c.e. i enjoy final fantasy 7 remake a lot.this is another game that i know will be amazing.cant wait for final fantasy 7 rebirth.word up son
@HammerKirby3 I agree with you
One step closer to Final Fantasy VII: Revengence
This is great, really enjoyed the remake so can't wait for more and it's going to look even better specifically made for the ps5
Looking forward to 2026 for Final Fantasy VII Really Sorry For This Whole Thing, We're Just Going To Remake The Damn Game For You Now.
Hmmm, square enix don't know how expensive this is to users when they play these games for the 1st time, final fantasy 7 originally was on 3 discs and now we are paying full price for each of those discs, we can't let loose on this because we all want a great experience but we shouldn't be blindly expecting this experience to be a simple one

You're right about it not being on ps but if you wanna play it that badly at this point just stream it on stadia? Get gamepass? Build a pc? Buy a switch?
@GorosBat So if Sony bought Square Enix, you'd be fine with FF7 being a PS5 exclusive?
@GorosBat don't mind the naysayers man, you make a very excellent point. Called em out on it expertly.
OT: maybe I shouldn't have watched this as I still haven't played the first and it was odd seeing and hearing what I did.
On another note I do think it's funny how seemingly most FF fans have gone on to accept paying full price for this ff7 remake after the original backlash.
@GorosBat The final fantasy 7 remake series was probably a ps exclusive since way back. This will have been contracted. At the time, Bethesda wouldn't even be a blink in Microsoft's eye. In other words, when this deal was made to make ff7r exclusive ms was eying up publisher Bethesda will ALL those RPGs.
@pyrrhic_victory It looks like he would rather Sony bought square than make 1 series exclusive, yes.
@pyrrhic_victory 100% dude, would show real commitment, actually have a sinking feeling it could happen since we know sony is still shopping around, either them or Fromsoft I can see happening.
@GorosBat Except when FF7 was originally released it was a Playstation exclusive. It was only released on PC over 6 months later. And it didn't come to other platforms until many years later. Final Fantasy being exclusive to a console is nothing new. Before Playstation it was exclusive to Super Nintendo.
@kcarnes9051 back then it was more of a case of the only popular console that could run it than exclusivety wars I think.
Edit : and the pc version of ff7 sold terribly. That's why they sell super high on ebay nowadays.
@GorosBat I never outrage about any exclusivity on anything. All my life consoles had exclusives. It's the status quo as far as I'm concerned.
@kcarnes9051 Surely the long-standing relationships between PlayStation and companies like Squeenix and Atlus should stand for something? They have a history together. It's difficult to say the same thing about developers and publishers that Microsoft throw money at.
@Balosi FF6 was exclusive to Super Nintendo despite the fact that the Sega Genesis could have easily ran it. My point is that the FF series being exclusive to a particular platform is nothing new. SquareEnix and Sony have a long-lasting relationship and have built their respective brands in tandem with each other for the last 25 years, and it got there by Sony building a system that as you say was the only thing that could run it at the time. Sony revolutionized the gaming world with the original PS, and they earned that relationship with Square and the brand recognition from the fans. Playstation could easily run Halo, but it will never sniff that series. None of this is new.
Iβm SO hyped for this!
@GorosBat I understand and appreciate the point you've been trying to make about console exclusivity. However in my opinion, and of course you're welcome to disagree, Microsoft has been far more egregious in this area. If remember back in 2015, MS paid Square Enix to make Rise of the Tomb Raider an Xbox One exclusive for about a year, where the previous game had been multiplatform. Then they began purchasing entire publishers: Bethesda, Activision; and potentially cutting off even more games from other platforms. Yes I realize Phil Spencer has stated that Call of duty will remain multiplatform, but he's all but confirmed that Elder Scrolls 6, (and probably Fallout 5) will be Xbox exclusive. PS players will never have to opportunity to try Starfield either. And then there's the acquisition of Ninja Theory, and Hellblade 2 also being an Xbox exclusive now. Hellblade originally launched on PS4/PC and sold close to a million copies before the Xbox/Switch versions came out. There's no way that the game's success on PS4 as a new IP wasn't a factor in Microsoft buying it up. Ninja Theory even made a next-gen version of Hellblade for Series X/S but (seemingly per Microsoft) barely acknowledged the PS4 version and refused to at least make a PS5 version as a final show of goodwill to the players who took a chance and supported the new IP. So my point is that Microsoft seems to take series or games that were once multiplatform, purchases them, and then cuts the series off from other consoles. Again, I get your frustration about FF7 and Persona, but I feel that Microsoft's behavior has been far more extreme in the last couple of years. No one was talking about either MS or PS buying entire publishers until Microsoft bought Bethesda. And just to clarify, I own a PS5, Series X, Switch, and have in the past owed every generation of PS and Xbox console. I am not a PlayStation fanboy or anything like that
Two huge Final Fantasy games along with Spider-Man 2 next year. Unless something gets pushed back, 2023 is going to be insane.
This should of been in a sony press conference with more hype. Post e3 is weird but still love the announcement and the look of this.
@pyrrhic_victory Purchasing a company and owning all the rights to their games is absolutely alright with me, if sony did the exact same with bethesda I wouldn't blink an eye. If I remember, Rise of the Tomb Raider was the last big budget exclusive that xbox did this with, but even so it still came to playstation afterwards. From the looks of things FF7 Remake seems to be a full exclusive meaning it will never come to xbox, can you agree that sounds worse? If that changes I will change my opinion in regards to that. I hate the comparison to Bethesda because microsoft bought them outright and who owns Square? O wait it's Square!
@bkeswick Obviously doesn't apply to you then. I will admit I made a blanket statement, what I should have said was a large proportion of people in this site think this way.
Looks like DLC for the first game. $70 DLC π
@GorosBat But making an exclusivity deal with a third-party publisher for a specific game and BUYING the publisher to make the game exclusive are kinda the same thing, only one is far more extreme and relatively unprecedented until Bethesda. The intent is to keep a game away from the competition, is it not?
@pyrrhic_victory Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo have been buying studios for decades, it isn't the same thing, look it's obvious you disagree with my statement so I'm not going to try to convince you of my way of thinking. Let's call it at that and agree to disagree. Have a nice dayπ
@GorosBat Studios yes, PUBLISHERS no. But yes you have a good one as well π
Lol imagine owning all three consoles but still coming here to bitterly argue with everyone about exclusivity when people are just trying to be excited about a new entry in a beloved franchise. I own all three and I like each system having exclusives (both first and third party) otherwise I would have wasted my money buying three different systems.
This game will be better than battlefield 2042.
@GorosBat Ay! Just wanted to let you know I agree with you 100%.
I'm hyped, but what is this turd?
Wheres my chocobo's, gold saucer, the lost city, weapons been released, attack on midgar, π€―π€―π€―π€―im to excited for what could possibly come,
And if this is indeed a trilogy, part 2and 3 are gonna to be huge games, even if they only follow the original by 60% its still so much
@GorosBat I was with you until your edit. Sony canβt buy publishers the way Microsoft can - they have to do stuff like this now, as its the only way to compete.
I do agree that it is wrong as FF7 is a big event game that everyone should have the chance to play. But it is also synonymous with the PlayStation historically, and Sony have evidently helped with marketing/funding.
And at least it has made it to PC/Steam. When a company is bought/acquired like Bethesda, those games often go nowhere else (even if they have historically been multi platform).
Microsoft buying entire publishers is way worse because it stops all games going multi platform.
Anyway, (enough of the arguments re: exclusivity), this is super exciting. Rebirth is also going to be huge if they properly re-create the same narrative from disc 1.
Cosmo canyon: I just canβt wait to see what they do with that
Excellent news to wake up to. I played the original a year before remake came out and aside from dated visuals it was great. I'm all for a trilogy taking the characters in a new direction.
@add286 Microsoft games go to PC as well dude, another ironic point is Xbox literally has the same type of relationship with Bethesda as Sony has with Square Enix. Microsoft got Morrowind as an exclusive for the OG xbox, they also has Oblivion as an exclusive for the 1st year as well. So if you say sony can do this with FF 7 remake, people shouldn't be mad at Microsoft with Bethesda and their games, they are actually keeping the PC portion day and date which is where Bethesda as a company has their entire legacy. I see Bethesda as a PC first company and because of Microsoft they developed games for console as well. If we ever see the next Bioshock or a Mass Effect game be xbox exclusive I don't want to see anyone complain about them not coming to Playstation as both those titles were exclusives at first on xbox 360. FYI I'm not disagreeing with you on the fact that sony have to do this tactic to keep up with microsoft, I just wish this stuff on either side was done period. Nintendo seem to get a pass as well, a recent one is Monster Hunter Rise, wish that came to PS and xbox too but they've made a deal with capcom to keep it off other consoles. Lastly, I believe sony actually have the capacity to buy Square Enix if they truly want to, I can actually see that coming to fruition one day!
Honestly, I lost most of my excitement for this. Knowing they rewrite the story and all the major events that made the characters the way they were like Cloud's journey to become who he is. And looking at the recent track record of story telling of square-enix with the last final fantasy's and kingdom hearts, it would seem this game is going to be a big mess. I love FFVII and the characters in it but it just baffles me what they are doing with it. It seemed like such a easy hit to just remake the original. Why go this route.
Iβm not really into FF but itβs clear thatβs always been a PlayStation thing. π€·πΌββοΈπ€·πΌββοΈ
Nobody should be surprised or shocked. Itβs not like something was announced and then cancelled. Itβs weird that some people bizarrely keep bragging about owning every platform but complain if some games arenβt on one of their devices π§. I donβt get it.
This trailer made my day, was really surprised and wasn't expecting much news!
I do hope they don't end up delaying it into Spring/Summer 2023 or later though.
Sometimes some exclusive deals have to do with sales numbers..I wonder how many copies FFVII sold on xbox?
@GorosBat
While I said in an earlier post I agree with your thoughts regarding the exclusivity I noticed your suggestion that if the publisher was bought it would be justified.
I see that as a worse situation though. Because while at present for whatever reason Sony have FF7 a buyout would take an entire catalogue of games away from all platforms. Dragon Quest in particular is popular with Nintendo fans. And Xbox only in recent years got Kingdom Hearts which if Sony bought SquareEnix would never happen again. I don't see that as being better.
Less attention for a certain poster and more attention for this game and series, please.
I think it's really interesting that the story is going in such a different direction from the original. It's easy for me to say as someone new to this series, but I kinda like that. Keeps everyone on their toes.
More of a reimgaining than a remake.
@GADG3Tx87 I agree with you on this, I think it's a pretty immoral thing to buy out an entire company, but my reasoning for it being "better" is that if you own the company, you have all the rights to the properties and is undeniably irrefutable and people have to accept that what ever Sony or Microsoft decide to do with their new company is up to them and them alone. We have good recent acquisitions by both companies, that even though they own the IP, doesn't mean they will keep them off other platforms. Destiny with Sony and Call of Duty for Microsoft, both are massive cash cows, so both companies want them on as many consoles as possible, but if either one decided that either franchise would be exclusive I wouldn't complain about it. Hope you understand my thinking method behind my words now, I generally just play my games on what ever I feel like. If a game comes out exclusive to one platform I generally buy it there on release, but for certain exclusive games on Nintendo Switch I will generally wait for the PC port for the superior performance, I often double and even triple dip for some games. I just feel sorry for xbox owners who will be missing out on mainline FF 7 remake games, but let's be honest, they'd make up for like 5-10% of sales. Fun talking to you dude, peaceπ
P.S Get a profile picture so people can recognise you!
@djhegzy I reckon part 3 will be called;
Final Fantasy 7; REcover the hair gel
It looks AMAZING! So excited for this too. Crisis Core, this Rebirth and XVI have been the best things shown this year!
2023 is shaping up to be one of the greatest years in gaming history!!!!!!!
Can't wait to see Sephiroth lose his ***** and burn down Nibelheim on PS5 hardware.
I wonder if Sephiroth will be a playable party member?
@GorosBat Same reason Xbox players were not crying over the Persona games. They get them so why cry. Same reason here.
It sucks when games are excluded from other systems, but if it is on your system, you dont cry about it.....makes perfect sense imo.
Iβm thrilled and happy itβs current gen onlyβ¦ but 3 FF games in a year not sure if itβs the best marketing move
What are the odds this will slip to 2024
My honest opinion as someone who loves Final Fantasy but mainly plays Xbox:
I am disappointed that it isnβt coming to Xbox. I have a Series X and a PS4 so obviously only one of those is next gen. Iβm not going to play the PS4 version (even though I claimed it through plus) as there isnβt any point. I also would prefer to get achievements over trophies as the rest of the Final Fantasy series has been played through on Xbox.
From Sony and Square - I think itβs a bit weird it was never confirmed as console exclusive 100%. If they had just done this originally or even now it would mean people would know for sure. I do find the way these 2 operate very strange but there we go.
From Microsoft - they knew they had disappointed players in 2022 (even if delays are done for the right reasons) so I was hoping they would put some finance behind this and secure a release. We donβt know the exact details behind the scenes of course. They are doing much better with Japanese games (though bring back Mistwalker seriously) but itβs not quite enough.
In conclusion - I want to play this. I donβt want to buy a PS5 but in a few years I most likely will and will play through all the exclusives that way. Exclusives are becoming more and more ***** in the industry in general but if something is exclusive let it be exclusive but make it clear. Timed and unclear deals are the worst.
I suppose lets just be glad these games are all kept in the PS/Xbox/Nintendo ecosystem and not elsewhere. Also no NFT ***** yet.
I don't really want to buy an Xbox but if I want to play Starfield and TES 6 then at some point I will have to.
Not interested in PC gaming and my TV won't get the GP app (nor am I up for unreliable streaming for gaming), so this is my only option.
Xbox players really do think they ought to have ALL the games and preferably Day One on Game Pass. If you're a big Final Fantasy fan surely you would prefer playing on PS anyway?
I think it's a load of fuss about nothing but that's the internet for ya!
I donβt understand why itβs being framed as βno longer a remakeβ. There was absolutely nothing in that trailer that isnβt in the original? You had the memory bit from Kalm with Cloud and Sephiroth at the Mt. Nibel Mako reactor, and then the flashback from the Nibel Mansion of Cloud and Zack after being attacked by Shinra soldiersβ¦ was there something else in there that wasnβt in the original??
I am interested in playing this FF game(never played one before) because it was a PS1 classic in the past. But I'll probably wait for the 'complete' version which will probably be ready when the PS6 comes out So I'll get the even better remaster/remake/re...etc etc +No way in hell will 2 big FF games come out next year!?!?
Yes.
Lookatit π
Imagine complaining about Sony buying exclusives after that bloated, boring mess of an Xbox show that seemed to have like 10 third party "launch" exclusives. FF has primarily been a Playstation series since it left the SNES era and most people with an Xbox don't care for JRPG's either way. It'll be on PC eventually too. It's funny how buying a studio out makes these trash exclusive practices all fine to fanboys, but funding them for exclusivity is somehow evil? Moving goal posts like always.
@GorosBat The Persona thing is an anomaly. Generally, if you're a fan of Japanese games, PlayStation is the place to be and has been for years. If you're ever in Japan, go look for the xbox section in a games store. They will have half a shelf at most.
My hype is re-ignited.
Companies often choose to partner with one machine for their output, and always will. What you want, to seem 'fair', is not part of the equation at all, look at monster hunter and all the nintendo releases for one out of hundreds of examples.
I believe firms will continue to choose where they wish to put their effort, and Id expect squeenix to focus on ps5, not only because of their long association, but because full price releases have real value on that platform and therefore full price sales are strong there. If we look at xbox, sales of full price titles are not high, and people expect something for nothing. Im guilty too, i have all the machines but I have never bought a title for my series x, its there for the sub games only, and I know many that do the same.
For someone thats sick of the world homogenisation and blandness and sameness that promotes, i say viva la difference.
Im glad tge xbox gets more fps shoot-em-indaface shooters and ps gets more jap style rpgs and ninty gets the ninty stuff.
Anyone who wants their world to be one beige colour where everything works everwhere and its all the same can take their world view and stick it. Platforms having different offerings is good. π
@NeoTokyo404 Yeah, it's like good-will and reciprocation should just be casually forgotten if not outright advocated against. Totally unreasonable of course. I favour my family and friends because they've been there for me, this is not simply a matter just to be casually abandoned. Also, if ff7 DID come to Xbox then there would probably be similar backlash if it wasn't announced for gamepass.
@LookingCoolJoker At LEAST π
@Starkei Even less probably thanks to gamepass.
@GorosBat Bioshock and Mass Effect are bad examples. All of those games are on both Xbox and PlayStation. To just side with one company for future games would be a lot worse. The most successful games on Xbox that are FF are probably 12 and 15. And I bet those sales are lower than ps versions.
Assuming the world pulls out of its current tailspin this may very well end up being my Christmas '23 game.
Letβs start a betting pool.
Part III will be called Reunion.
@Uncharted2007
Either we will get to enjoy Rebirth or a nuclear war will break out.
Itβs like the 1980s all over again.
@OrtadragoonX Accurate.
Everyone under your desks! It'll keep you safe from nuclear annihilation!
@GorosBat Don't fret. Exclusive just means for the first 1-2 years. It will come to pc. Pretty much every time this happens, people like to goad the other camp. Hell people love to complain so much, that there is such vitriol over Epic vs. Steam.
@Cephun My dude, once you experience PC gaming you will understand why Steam is the superior launcher lol. PC gamers meme about it though so it's ok, but at the same time 99% of people see a game launch on EGS exclusive and immediately say no buy, the backlash works and developers such as Square Enix suffer for it in sales until the game makes its way over to steam. I'm joking when I say this.... But am I?π€£
I'm still a bit disappointed it's not a straight-up remake; they seem to be doing a sort of meta-commentary on the notion of remakes, using the original game's plot as a baseline; I can't imagine anyone coming to the series fresh would get anything from that aspect of it.
@get2sammyb
Somebody in a video said once that he will forever refer to brain aneurysms as "Nomuras" and I laughed way too hard at that.
Iβm out. FF7R was garbage. If theyβre going even further away from the original I canβt even imagine how awful itβs going to be, I just know I wonβt play it.
@GorosBat Your basic assumption is that exclusivity is intrinsically bad. I just don't agree with that. That's probably why this whole row comes across off base to me.
@GorosBat No offense, but nobody in the comments (unless it has been deleted or removed by mods) has been harassing you. People have replied with their opinions and questions but nobody is personally attacking you to the point of harassment. Nonetheless, have a good day.
@RevGaming
I mean hepatitis is better than Battlefield 2042. Thatβs a low bar to clear.

Great!! Now I must finish the game again on PS5 and play the DLC!!

Can we stick to talking about the game, please? We don't want to remove every comment about exclusivity but at this point we might have to. Let's just leave it there!
The remake is great. It was the first time I'd touched FF7 and really enjoyed it. looking forward to seeing more of the 2nd instalment.
I love the first remake on ps4, I really can't wait for this one
This is one instance I think they are screwing the fans by not making a PS4 version. They started the story on the PS4 and should give those that have not bought a PS5 the option to continue the story. To be clear, I am not saying sequels to established franchises need to be on the older consoles, it this is a different case. This is like releasing a single book in three parts but making you purchase an ebook reader to finish the story after allowing you to read the first part in hard copy.
@OrtadragoonX jesus hahaja
@HunterRose
But the counter argument is why hold the game back?
Removed - trolling/baiting
@GorosBat Ive had Steam since it came out. It's cool, but I'm getting close to 50 now. So I just enjoy playing games, instead of getting all mad about what platform it's on. It makes me laugh, since people were just as frothy when Steam came out, and we had to install it to play HL2.
@PegasusActual93
Olβ Dartigan lol.
@OrtadragoonX I get that argument but at the same ti e then then they should have made part 1 a PS5 exclusive. Donβt give PS4 owners hope that they will get the full game and then leave the other 2 thirds of the game on a system they do not own. Again, this is different than something like the Ratchet and Clank series where you get the next game in the franchise on the PS5 only. Players were gIven an incomplete story on the PS4 and have to shell out $400 to $500 to complete that story.
Wait, can't I celebrate that it's going to be a PS5 exclusive? This is part of the information given in the broadcast, so I'm satisfied. ;*
I'm still not really sold on the idea of changing the story into a new story. Why not just make this FFXVI with new places and characters, make the DMC wannabe they're calling XVI into some spinoff, and not tarnish a classic by "remaking it" into something different. I was hoping for FF7, but modern gameplay, not "alternate reality FF7." Everything Nomura touches turns to incomprehensible slop that's weirdly likable but for all the wrong reasons.
I can't help but fee that the original idea a decade ago of remaking 7 got replaced by Nomura's ambition to make something new and his own, somewhere along the way, but he's stuck milking loved characters and locations rather than actually creating something totally new.
@Grumblevolcano I think any rumor confirmation by 7R not coming to Xbox are negated by Crisis Core coming to Xbox. Kind of a wash, so it's still anyone's guess. To me that's hinting at a "no" though. Whatever the hold on 7R seems specific to 7R. And I'm shocked it doesn't include Crisis Core.
@nomither6
Thereβs advantages and disadvantages to PC gaming. I was a PC gamer for a long time but then transitioned to consoles.
Start up costs on PC is high for hardware. You do save money over time through much cheaper digital games. But console gamers can mitigate that somewhat by going physical and shopping around.
Optimization problems. A lot of PC games are poorly optimized depending on your hardware set-up. Requires tinkering to get the best framerate and resolution results.
If you play multiplayer games then PC can be a nightmare because of cheaters and hackers. Itβs insanely prevalent on PC. There are console cheat mechanisms, but they arenβt as widely available or nearly as widely used. Itβs why Iβve been calling for segregation of PC players from console players on cross play titles. No offense to my PC brethren, but constant aimbot gets real old.
But there are some significant bonuses to PC. More competitive digital storefronts with cheaper prices and much better return policies. More versatility; a PC can be used for work and play. Canβt do that with a console. Mods for all games. Lower input latency. Thereβs a lot of pros to PC gaming.
But as an ex PC gamer, I donβt think those pros necessarily make consoles obsolete or anything like that. They both have their use cases and customer bases.
For me I got out of it because I was fixing to need to build a new rig (my 2006 rbuild with upgrades over time was at the end of its motherboard compatibility service life by 2012). I already had a PS3. When the PS4 came out I decided to just stick with consoles and have ever since.
Iβve considered getting back into it a few times. But the costs are just too prohibitive for me to start an all new build. Not when my PS5 and Switch satisfy me.
@NEStalgia I disagree, Crisis Core could be a similar situation to how Quake Remastered came to all current platforms rather than just PC/Xbox.
@Grumblevolcano IDK about that. Quake is a legacy game that's even been on Nintendo, mobile, Mac, everything. PS was the only platform it HADN'T been on. Crisis Core was a PS exclusive full-stop, not even PC, until this moment. God of War and Uncharted are technically on more platforms than Crisis Core until now. I can't imagine the moment Sony's buying the publisher is the moment they decide to bring a PS classic to Xbox. Not bringing it outside PS until PS nearly owns it would be the weirdest possible thing to do. And if talks with Sony are giving Sony an upper hand in not relasing 7R despite it not being under an exclusivity lock anymore, you'd think they'd have included Crisis Core in that list. Or that Square would have taken the non-exclusivity time before Sony controls them to make more cash and slip the series outside Sony's control.
More likely, for whatever reason, Sony's contract on 7R is extended, somehow, with the sequels, and just doesn't extend to Crisis Core, and S-E took the opportunity to put it everywhere (even if it barely makes sense to do it.)
Personally, I don't think this FF situation gives us any clues at all as to if a buyout is happening or not. 7R implies it might, CC implies it isn't. But if I were to interpolate any meaning, I'd lean towards it suggesting no buyout, and Sony just having some contractual arrangement for the 7R trilogy itself (and 16 of course.)
Remember Stranger of Paradise was also multiplat recently. So 7R and 16 are literally the only Sony exclusive things (and Forespoken as a contractually made "2nd party" game funded by Sony as far as we know.) I don't think we can extrapolate purchase intent from one game and one trilogy being contractually exclusive while other entries in the series aren't.
@HunterRose Part 1 came out 7 months before the PS5 released.
@Intr1n5ic correct and Ratchet and Clank: Rifts Apart came out 7 months after it was released. I am sure both were in development for quite awhile. If they wanted to keep FF7 on one system they could have delayed the launch of FF7 Remake to the release of the PS5 and made it a launch title.
Look, I am have no dog in this hunt. I have a PS5 and will be playing the next part when it comes out. I just think it is a little slimy to break up an already established game into parts, start it on one system, and then not put the rest on the same system. It would be like Telltale Games making the first couple of chapters of one of Walking Dead: Season One on one console and then placing the last remaining chapters on the next generation.
@djhegzy Reunion is already taken by Crisis Core remaster.
@Hunter_Rose That decision would have made no sense financially for a 3rd party developer, and I'm positive it would have gone over poorly with this games huge fanbase considering how difficult it was to purchase a PS5 at launch.
You made a point about making people spend 400 to 500 dollars to play the sequel, yet you seemingly would of had no issue with people having to spend that to play part 1?
They clearly have a much larger scope for rebirth and part 3, are using a brand new engine which is probably far more resource intensive, and more importantly, fans of the series will have had 3 years to upgrade by the time this releases, which is a lot more consumer friendly than if they had started on the PS5.
I don't think there's anything slimy about what they're doing, and the Telltale comparison is ridiculous.
@Intr1n5ic correct, I would have not had a problem with them making people pay to play part 1 on the PS5. The expectation would be there for all the parts to be on the PS5 at that point. With them releasing part 1 of Final Fantasy 7 on the PS4 the fans had an expectation for the other parts to be on PS4. It would be different if they released all of a remade FF7 on PS4 and then put a fully remade FF8 on PS5.
Is the Telltale part really ridiculous? Please explain. Like the Telltale games, The remade FF7 is being released in parts. Did people who bought the PS4 version of FF7 Remake get the full story? No, they got part of it and are now being told that to finish it they have to buy a completely new machine.
@HunterRose People should stop expecting things before they're announced, problem solved.
"Is the Telltale part really ridiculous? Please explain."
Telltale games aren't huge 50 to 60 hour long installments with system demands anywhere near what it takes to make a game like this. Part 2 of FF7 is them going out in to the open world, it's not going to be confined to the limited locations and linear corridor filled areas of part 1. They've decided to use an updated engine to really capitalise on that and show it off, and they obviously didn't want to be restrained by 10 year old tech. Giving people 18 months notice about their plans is more than fair.
Great announcement. I don't care about exclusivity, just glad the game is coming. Lots of fans out there are happy.
@Cephun Completely valid mate, at the end of the day we should all just play the games we want wherever we can. PC is fun for me thoughπ
Man what even is this game? Am I the only one that was left cynical after the first and now completely uninterested after this trailer?
@Sam_ATLUS Oh I definitely agree with that. I know it sounds selfish because I have a PS5 but this has been the longest cross-gen period I can remember and on top of that seems like every other AAA title is a remake. I can't wait until cross-gen period is over and it's not like those games won't be waiting for people who have yet to find a PS5. I waited 3 years to buy a PS4 and most of the great games I played were heavily discounted by that time.
@HunterRose yes, people who bought FF7R on PS4 got the complete story for that game. If you've actually played it you'd know it's a complete standalone game.
What they're doing is making it into a series, which is actually something that FF7 already was. Before Crisis, Crisis Core, Advent Children, Dirge of Cerberus, those are all parts of the original FF7, none of which are on the original PlayStation.
Your complaint is like saying that Last of Us Part 2 should've released on PS3 or that Part 1 should not have released on PS3. There's never been an expectation before that all games in a series are available on the same console generation, so it's weird to suddenly complain about that now.
@GADG3Tx87 really? I never knew that. Isn't epic its own giant Corporation now tho? So if they wanted to they could now? Unless Microsoft bought the gears ip and epic doesn't own it anymore
@SerJosh97
Yeah, after the launch of the PS4 and Xbox One I read in the January 2014 that Epic and Microsoft's partnership during the Xbox 360 era had ended. Epic intended to port the Gears of War trilogy to PS4 which I also read and they had supposedly tested it on PS3, strange considering the vastly different hardware.
Within days after an article popped up announcing that Microsoft bought the Gears franchise from Epic. Understandably since it was one of the games that gave the Xbox 360 huge popularity. They then set up 'The Coalition' who made Gears Judgement and Gears 4 ,& 5 which imo were never as good as Epic's entries.
Epic then went on to create the Epic Game Store on PC. And since then they've been quite competitive with Steam and have grown popular. There are some people on Steam that won't touch it because of their Steam library and quite often Epic secures timed deals which infuriates Steam loyalists who say 'no steam no buy' etc. The most recent being a timed deal with FF7R after Sony's deal expired. Epic's deal is close to ending so I expect FF7R to arrive on Steam soon.
